Career path

Career Options:

This degree prepares students for the following careers:

  • Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (school districts, private practice)
  • Instructional Assistant (school districts)

Advising Notes:

  • Alternative core coursework sequence: SLPA 300, 110, 120, 105, 115, 121.
  • Students should take DEAF 310 before SLPA 121, preferably in the semester prior to taking SLPA 121.
  • Students can substitute ESLW 340 for ENGWR 300/480.

Scheduling Notes:

  • SLPA 115 and 120 are offered in the fall.
  • SLPA 110 and 121 are offered in the spring.
  • All SLPA courses are offered in the evening except SLPA 115, which is scheduled 2 days a week in the afternoon because of the lab component of working in the ARC Child Development Center.

Other Notes:

  • SLPA 115 requires a medical clearance including TB clearance (within 12 months), MMR and TDap (within 10 years), and a flue vaccination (optional).
  • SLPA 121 has an enrollment limitation, including TB clearance, CPR first-aid certification and Live Scan. See the course description in the catalog.
  • Some students use this degree, with additional coursework, to prepare to transfer to CSUS to earn a Communication Sciences and Disorders degree. If considering transfer to CSUS, students should take PHYS 310 to satisfy the area IV GE requirement.
